St Teresa of Avila Statue

St. Teresa of Jesus was born in Avila, Spain, in 1515. She dedicated her life to prayer and spirituality. She was one of the great reformers of the Carmelite Order and was the founder, along with St. John of the Cross, of the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites.

St. Teresa died in 1582. She was beatified by Pope Paul V in 1614 and canonised by Pope Gregory XV in 1622. Pope Paul VI proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church in 1970 and recognized her the title of Mater Spiritualium (Mother of Spirituality).
